Your words touched me. I, too, have an issue with my hearing owing to an accident complicated by my work on the flightline. Beethoven never let that stop him, and it shouldn't stop us!
I certainly understand your fondness for the "Ode to Joy" theme. But have you ever heard its precursor, the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80? This unique piece can not be classified in the traditional sense since it contains all the facets of a solo improvosation, a concerto, wind and string quartets, and a symphony. This is but an excerpt. It's a bit fast, but the quality is the best I could find on the video list. My recommendation for the finest performance I've heard is from Alfred Brendel, piano. Enjoy! -
