I could write a book about this. I have VA insurance and I'm 63 years old. My wife and I were self-employed for 17 years and before that we lived in CA and I was self-employed there also. My wife worked outside the house then. Unknown to us my CPA was not taking out Social Security for my wife but only myself. Later after it was too late, I asked him why he did this, and his answer was, "I didn't know you wanted me to." Anyway, we had private health insurance, I had a second neck surgery, and our insurance went from about $600 a month to over $1,800.00 a month in less than a year. They priced us out and we had to quit them because we couldn't afford to pay that amount. Besides that it was going up by the month. I got on VA and she has Diabetes. She tried to get insurance many times and they put a rider on her illness and still wanted $850 a month. In the mean time I had major heart surgery and was in a coma for 4 weeks. To make a very long story shorter, we had to retire. I received 100% disability on the Social Security and 30% military. My wife cannot get insurance at all under a thousand a month. We cannot afford that. She is 62 and cannot receive any Social Security until 65 when she will be eligible for Medicare. As far as I am concerned, organized crime has gotten into the insurance game. We paid into the private insurance for 15 years and they priced us out which was their plan. There is no insurance available to her from any plan under a thousand bucks a month, we’ve been down every avenue and tried every way possible. If she had paid into the Social Security program she would be eligible for Medicare but we did not know this was happening. Why pay for health insurance for her anyway when they refuse to pay for any problems they can associate with Diabetes? Now we stand to loose everything we’ve worked for all our life if she gets sick and has to go to the hospital. Isn’t that lovely?
